The National Bureau of Statistics of China released a series of macroeconomic data including Q2 GDP data on 16 July 2020. Although the Chinese economy was hit hard in the first quarter, it has since rebounded, and China is likely to be the only major economy that will achieve positive GDP growth in 2020.
The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai has the honour to invite a panel of leading experts on China's economy to share with us their insights on China's role in the world economy and their commentary on the critical issues facing China today. Our guest speakers bring a wealth of China experience that covers financial services, policy and research.
Moderator Mary Boyd is Director, Economist Corporate Network Shanghai in The Economist Group. Ms. Boyd is responsible for programme development and client servicing in Shanghai. She also provides research and conceptual support on China for Economist Corporate Network programmes. Complementing expertise with expertise, Ms. Boyd's economic knowledge has also led to the publication of a number of Economist Intelligence Unit publications, including Country Report, China Hand and Business China. She co-authored the Economist Intelligence Unit Report Taking on the Competition: Domestic Companies in China. Building on her expansive set of experiences, members will benefit from Ms. Boyd's insights on China's economic future.
Panelist Dr. Juann Hung is a Senior Associate Professor in Economics, at IBSS. Dr. Hung was a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and then the lead international economist at the U.S. Congressional Budget Office. In those two posts combined, Dr. Hung provided policy analysis and recommendations to policy makers for over 20 years. Dr. Hung's economic knowledge has also led to research on a wide range of policy-related issues, including foreign exchange intervention, causes and consequences of currency crises, macroeconomic effects of globalization, and China's growth model and its implications. Building on her expansive set of experiences, attendees will benefit from Dr. Juann Hung's unique insights and forecasts on China's economic future.
Panelist Mr. Dan Wang, is an analyst of Gavekal Dragonomics Mr. Dan Wang's focus is China's technology capabilities (semiconductors) as well as the ongoing US restrictions on Chinese firms, especially Huawei. He also follows the speed of supply chain relocation outside China. Attendees will have the opportunity to listen to Mr. Wang's latest insights into US-China tensions, semiconductors, and Huawei.
Objective: An overview of economic developments during 2020 thus far and a better understanding of what a purported "New Normal" implies for the economy.
