How much do you really understand about sanctions? What they are, what enforcement looks like and all the legal language that goes with them like "secondary sanctions", "material assistance" and who exactly are OFAC and BIS?


The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai has the honour to invite Nicholas Lum (林健良), Partner of Clyde & Co to talk about legal terms and basics of international sanction.

In an event moderated by Rebecca Lee, Co-Chair of the Legal & Compliance Committee, Nicholas Lum, a partner in  Clyde & Co's international trade practice, will provide an overview of the key legal terms and basic takeaways for business around international sanctions to help non-lawyers understand how to do good business in an increasingly complex international environment.

    Nicholas specialises in dispute resolution, with a particular focus on international trade and commodities, shipping, and general commercial disputes. He also advises on regulatory and compliance issues, particularly in relation to sanctions from time to time.

    Nicholas spearheads Clyde & Co China offices’ cross-border dispute resolution efforts. He frequently advises and represents clients in international and local arbitrations conducted under various institutional and ad-hoc arbitration rules including SIAC, HKIAC, LCIA, LMAA, CIETAC, ICC and UNCITRAL. Nicholas also has extensive experience in advising on issues relating to the enforcement of Court judgments and arbitral award in various jurisdictions across Asia and Europe.

    Nicholas has more than a decade's experience assisting Chinese clients with their outbound legal needs, including providing strategies in mitigating risks in overseas markets, in addition to advising on complex cross-border dispute resolution matters. He is a Singapore qualified lawyer with rights of audience and extensive experience before the Singapore Courts.

    Nicholas is also qualified as an Associate Mediator of the Singapore Mediation Centre. His experience in mediation means that he is able to provide vigorous reality testing where appropriate and at the same time remain pragmatic towards the contesting parties’ commercial needs.

    Nicholas is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and seminars in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany and in major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Dalian, covering topics around sanctions, international trade and international arbitration.

    He is recommended and recognised by various legal directories including Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Chambers Asia Pacific and Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific, and has been described as a "Disputes Star in arbitration" and "someone understanding the China market very well".

    Apart from English, Nicholas speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese and Fujianese.
