With COVID-19 making waves through the property market, BritCham Shanghai's and AustCham Shanghai's Built Environment Committees have brought together a panel of experts to dive deep into how the Chinese real estate sector has reacted to the crisis. Join us as we explore the major changes in the last 6 months and unpack the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Panellists from JLL, Savills and EY will each offer a unique perspective on the market, providing insights into the influence COVID-19 has had on the areas of Design, Leasing and Investment.

    Current responsibilities

    Tong is currently the Managing Director of Corporate Solutions Development in China and the Co-representatives of Corporate Solutions in China.

    Past Experience

    Before joining JLL, Tong was part of a global design, engineering and management consultancy firm; and has had his hands on multiple leadership roles in firm management, business development and operations in various MNC companies, mainly in the UK and China.

    From 2010 to 2011, Tong was seconded to the UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), where he actively promoted British expertise in China—particularly in the infrastructure sector— bridging the two business worlds together.

    Education and affiliations

    Tong is a licensed Chartered Civil Engineer with an Executive MBA degree from the prestigious Cambridge University Judge Business School.

    In addition, Tong has been elected as the Vice-Chairman of British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai since May 2015, after serving two terms as Board Member. Tong is also a professional examiner or reviewer of the UK Institution of Civil Engineers.

These projects include hotel, residential, commercial, warehouse and office properties at various stages of development. He also has significant experience in pre-acquisition financial due diligence and commercial experience in project screening, evaluation, negotiation and completion.

    James Macdonald was appointed as Head of Savills Research, China in 2007. He has the overall responsibility to ensure the successful delivery and expansion of Savills research capabilities as well as to consolidate and integrate all research activities across mainland China. The research team covers a wide range of cities and assets classes.

    The increased capabilities of the Research department will support the continuing expansion of the company in one of the world’s fastest developing nations, securing Savills position as a dominant player in the China real estate market.

    As the head of research James has spoken at numerous conferences hosted by PERE, REIW, MIPIM and ULI as well as various other chambers of commerce and investment banks, he is also frequently cited in both the trade press and mainstream business press.

    Originally from London, UK, James has lived and worked in Shanghai since 2002. Since joining Savills that year, James has been actively involved in the growth of the Research department, advising and liaising with numerous international and domestic developers, and financial institutions.
