When the scale and impact of COVID-19 became clear many companies were already feeling some of its effects, whether they were government regulations or operational issues. In this event, we will learn from three accomplished leaders about how their companies responded to the crises and how they aimed to strengthen their position.

    China President at Service Master

    Adam Cui is the President of ServiceMaster China. He manages the market entry strategy, M&A, and business development for all the acquired businesses. Adam has a diversified background. He started with Sinopec, a state-owned company. After his MBA at Darden School at the University of Virginia, he joined Bain & Company, a professional service firm, as management consultants. Later he joined Lenovo group as China strategy director then Sales Operation Director for North America. In 2008 he joined Associated British Foods and later become the Managing Director for its AB Agribusiness. Adam joined ServiceMaster as China President in 2019.

    ServiceMaster is an American pest control company. It entered China in mid-2019 through equity investments in selected local market leaders. During Covid-19 many customers in food service restaurants, hotel and retail sectors were in difficulties. China management team and local business leaders took decisive actions to overcome challenges and capture opportunities. Overall ServiceMaster China has achieved good revenue growth in first half of 2020 and emerged as the #1 player in China.

    GM at Hormel Foods China

    Mr. Norman Gu is General Manager at Hormel Foods China. In the current role, he oversees China strategy, M&A, business development and daily operation including three production sites in China, two Hormel® process meat plants and Skippy® peanut butter plant.

    Norman started his career with Hormel since 2003 as Regional sales manager in Shanghai. In 2006, he moved to Beijing Hormel as sales director, responsible for sales, marketing and logistics for North China. After two years, he relocated back to Shanghai and in charged national Foodservice business. He was named VP of sales & marketing and responsible for both Foodservice & Retail since 2014. He was promoted to current role in 2016.

    He achieved MBA from Remin university of China, also had various sales jobs before Hormel Foods. Currently, he also served as Co-chair of Food, Agriculture, and Beverage committee at Shanghai American Chamber.

    James Greener

    VP Operations at Kelvion Heat Exchangers China

    James is currently VP Operations of Kelvion Heat Exchangers China, leading its turnaround after years of decline and its transformation into an innovative industrial leader.

    For over 20 years he has focused on the integration and transformation of industrial and automotive enterprises. From 1999 to 2003 he worked on fifteen restructuring, integration and transformation projects in China with PwC ranging from industrial state enterprises to a private equity-backed IT systems integrator. He then ran BMW Supplier Development in Greater China for five years and from 2010 to 2012 Daimler Van Interior at Fujian Benz. He has led over 50 automotive supplier development programs as a VDA 6.3 Process Auditor. He also delivers industrial transformation projects in other industries, recent examples being pumps, chemicals and refrigerators. Digital transformation is an ongoing theme, especially the deployment of blockchain-enabled smart contracts in supply chain finance and value network integration.

    He lives in Shanghai with his wife and two children. James speaks Mandarin and German, holds an MBA degree focused on Chinese state-owned enterprise restructuring, formerly chaired the Asia Transformation and Turnaround Association and writes on the birth of the Industrial Revolution.

    Kari Hakanen is currently General Manager of Asian Risks Management Services in Shanghai where he established the office and is leading its expansion.

    He started his career in the public sector of his native Finland with assignments in Shanghai and Tokyo. Upon returning to Shanghai he transitioned into the insurance sector where he worked with companies such as Jardine Lloyd Thompson until it was acquired by MMC. He then joined Asian Risks Managements Services to set-up and open their Shanghai office.

    He lives in Shanghai with his wife and daughter. Kari holds a MA in Asian Studies from University of Turku and is also Acting Chair of British Chamber Shanghai’s Financial Services Committee.
