The COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a massive blow to economic, social, health and wellbeing to globe, and with it a tide of uncertainty and misinformation. In China, the coronavirus outbreak has caused short-term upheaval in the consumer industry, especially for catering, hospitality and tourism, etc. However, crises are often said to represent new opportunities. The British Chamber Shanghai's Hospitality, Leisure, Food & Beverage Committeeinvites experts from Deloittee and China Skinny to share insights and help business prepare for the rebound.

Deloitte APAC consumer products and retail sectors leader Tian Bing Zhang will discuss the digital transformation from a consumer scenario view, and provide solutions for enterprises to develop a sharper competitive edge and be better positioned for the consumption rebound to come.


Deloitte Financial Advisory Partner Jimmy Chan will share the result of the joint catering industry survey conducted by China Cuisine Association and Deloitte, and introduce Deloitte's practical experiences in providing professional support to many enterprises negotiating systematic or structural financial crises and major emergencies.


China Skinny Managing Director Mark Tanner will draw on his experience at China Skinny which has been closely monitoring the pandemic's impact in consumer behaviour and business adaptation since January. China Skinny has worked with national and state governments and MNC brands around solutions and strategies to minimise the impacts and capitalise on the opportunities from the crisis.


Mark will discuss the changes in consumer behaviour and marketing over the different stages of the virus, changes in go-to-market strategies, and clarifying areas of concern based on conversations with over 200 exporters since the outbreak. Mark will deliver his data, anecdotes and recommendations in a thoughtful, grounded and concise tone, ensuring takeaways are actionable and realistic.

    Partner, Corporate Finance Advisory at Deloitte

    Mr. Jimmy Chan is a partner of the Financial Advisory Services and also the leader of Deloitte’s China M&A Corridor, a joint venture by Deloitte Global and Deloitte China to provide seamless professional services to Chinese and multinational companies on outbound and inbound M&A transactions. He also leads Deloitte’s Financial Advisory Services for the financial services industry in China.

    Mr. Chan has many years of successful experience in advising domestic and foreign clients on mergers and acquisitions, private fund raisings and restructurings. He has significant corporate finance experience in infrastructure, real estate, retailing and financial services.

    Mr. Chan was also a founding member of Deloitte China’s corporate finance practice and built its Financial Advisory Practice in Beijing.

    Mr. Chan also served as the Vice Chairman of the Financial Services and Treasury of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association.

Prior to moving to China, Mark rode his bike across Canada solo in the middle of winter, hunted for ancient viking treasure in Iceland and led the first unbroken journey from the source of the Blue Nile to the sea.

    Mark is also the member of New Zealand China Council. He is working on a number of COVID-19-related projects from clients ranging from the State Government of Queensland to Colgate.
